All praise is due to All\u0101h, Lord of the worlds. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon His Messenger, his family, his Companions and all who truly follow him. To proceed:<\/p>\n
The scholars have a noble role: to preserve the ah\u0101d\u012bth, to teach the people, to guide them to the Sunnah, and to correct misunderstandings\u2014especially those arising from bid\u02bfah and disobedience to All\u0101h. They teach the Book of All\u0101h along with its meaning, just as the Messenger \ufdfa taught the Companions, who then transmitted it to the generations after them.<\/p>\n
When one studies the lives of the scholars of the Ummah and their efforts in the field of da\u02bfwah, a unified methodology is evident. They all return to the same guiding light\u2014namely, the Book of All\u0101h, the Sunnah of His Messenger \ufdfa, and the way of the Sah\u0101bah (may All\u0101h be pleased with them). <\/p>\n
We see this methodology among the T\u0101bi\u02bf\u012bn, such as Ab\u016bl \u2018\u0100liyah (d.\u202f90H), Sa\u02bf\u012bd ibn al\u2011Musayyib (d.\u202f94H), \u02bfUmar ibn \u02bfAbdul\u2011\u02bfAz\u012bz (d.\u202f101H), al-Hasan al\u2011Basr\u012b (d.\u202f110H), Muhammad ibn Sir\u012bn (d.\u202f110H), az\u2011Zuhri (d.\u202f124H), Ayy\u016bb as\u2011Sakhtiy\u0101n\u012b (d.\u202f131H)\u2014all of them took their knowledge from the Book and Sunnah upon the understanding of the Sah\u0101bah, they preserved it, and passed it on. <\/p>\n
The next generation\u2014the atb\u0101\u02bf at\u2011T\u0101bi\u02bf\u012bn, such as Sufy\u0101n ath\u2011Thawr\u012b (d.\u202f161H), M\u0101lik bin Anas (d.\u202f179H), \u02bfAbdull\u0101h ibn al\u2011Mub\u0101rak (d.\u202f181H)\u2014continued this tradition. And this noble transmission of knowledge and understanding has endured through the centuries.<\/p>\n
During the Ban\u016b Umayyah dynasty, the Sunnah was largely protected, and Ahlul-Bid\u02bfah were subdued. This remained the case until their overthrow in 132 AH. Then Ban\u016b al-\u02bfAbb\u0101s replaced them, almost decimating the entire ruling class of Ban\u016b Umayyah. It was in their era that Ahlul-Bid\u02bfah became dominant\u2014sects like the Jahmiyyah, the Mu\u02bftazilah, the Kull\u0101biyyah all deviated in the affair of All\u0101h\u2019s Names and Attributes, and in credal matters of the Unseen. The \u02bfAbb\u0101sids also established Baitul\u2011Hikmah (The House of Wisdom) in Baghdad, housing Greek philosophy, works of Aristotle, Plato, Plotinus and others. Through Baitul-Hikmah and the translation movement, ideas and philosophies of India, Rome, Persia, and Greece seeped into Isl\u0101m, causing much corruption and misguidance in the ranks of the Muslims.<\/p>\n
By the bounty of Allah upon His servants, Allah also raised, in that very time, many scholars of Had\u012bth and Sunnah: Ahmad ibn Hanbal, ash-Sh\u0101fi\u02bfee, \u02bfAbdur\u2011Rahm\u0101n ibn Mahdi, Ish\u0101q ibn Ibr\u0101h\u012bm ar\u2011R\u0101haway, al-D\u0101rimi, the R\u0101ziyayn, al-Barbah\u0101ri, and others who stood firm, defending Isl\u0101m in the era of Ban\u016b al\u2011\u02bfAbb\u0101s, when Ahlul-Bid\u02bfah had somewhat of a free hand to spread falsehood. The spread of bid\u02bfah through institutions, courts, and libraries meant that innovators such as Bishr al\u2011Mar\u012bs\u012b and Ibn Ab\u012b Du\u02bf\u0101d\u2014the latter played a major role in the imprisonment and torture of Im\u0101m Ahmad\u2014found influence in the royal court, propagating the worst types of innovations.<\/p>\n
Yet, in every age, All\u0101h raises men who stand firm for the truth. Sufy\u0101n ath\u2011Thawr\u012b said: \u201cThe angels are guardians of the heavens, and Ahlul\u2011Had\u012bth are guardians of the earth.\u201d<\/strong> These great scholars of Ahlul-Hadeeth defended the deen during times when bid\u02bfah became widespread. They wrote works of \u02bfaq\u012bdah\u2014such as Us\u016bl as\u2011Sunnah<\/em> by Im\u0101m Ahmad, Kit\u0101b as\u2011Sunnah<\/em> by \u02bfAbdull\u0101h ibn Ahmad, Sharhus-Sunnah by al-Barbah\u0101ri, Aslus-Sunnah<\/em> by the R\u0101ziyayn\u2014and later, Sharh Us\u016bl I\u02bftiq\u0101d Ahl as\u2011Sunnah wal\u2011Jam\u0101\u02bfah<\/em> by al\u2011L\u0101lak\u0101\u2019\u012b, al-Ib\u0101nah<\/em> by Ibn Battah, and many others\u2014all in response to widespread misguidance and a desire to spread the true Deen of Allah. <\/p>\nNon\u2011Muslims today, and general unlearned Muslims call the era of Banul-\u02bfAbb\u0101s, the \u201cGolden Age of Isl\u0101m\u201d because it was the era of the Arab philosophers such as al-Kindi, al-Far\u0101bi and Ibn S\u012bna who adopted the teachings and heresies of ancient Greece through the translation movement. As for the Muslims who know the Sunnah and value the Islamic Creed, they recognise that the honour of the Muslims lies in that which Allah enabled in the scholars who preserved and penned the correct belief, the had\u012bth and Sunnah\u2014and explained the Islamic Law (Shar\u012b\u02bfah). <\/p>\n
Centuries later, in the time of Shaykh al\u2011Isl\u0101m Ibn Taymiyyah, bid\u02bfah was again widespread beyond what we can imagine. Yet, he stood firm and refuted it, clarifying the \u02bfaq\u012bdah of Ahlus\u2011Sunnah wal\u2011Jam\u0101\u02bfah and Ahlul-Had\u012bth in many works that are found in his Majm\u016b\u02bf al\u2011Fat\u0101w\u0101<\/em> and elsewhere. His students, such as Ibn \u02bfAbdul\u2011H\u0101d\u012b (d. 744H), Ibn Rajab (d. 795 AH), Ibn al\u2011Qayyim, Im\u0101m adh\u2011Dhahab\u012b and Ibn Katheer, all learned from him and themselves produced great works, including writings defending the true beliefs of the religion.<\/p>\nAfter Shaykh al\u2011Isl\u0101m died in prison in 728 AH, those opposed to him tried to extinguish his legacy. But by All\u0101h\u2019s decree, his knowledge survived. It was carried forward, generation after generation\u2014even when bid\u02bfah seemed victorious.<\/p>\n
Five centuries later (in the twelfth Islamic century), Muhammad ibn \u02bfAbdul Wahh\u0101b studied those works, mingled with scholars familiar with them, and revived that knowledge. He authored Kit\u0101b at\u2011Tawh\u012bd<\/em>, Qaw\u0101\u02bfid al-Arba\u02bfah<\/em>, Usool ath-Thal\u0101thah<\/em>, Kashf ash\u2011Shubhah\u0101t<\/em>, and many other books. He summarised Ibn al\u2011Qayyim\u2019s Z\u0101d al-Ma\u02bf\u0101d<\/em>\u2014so he spread the pure teachings of the Salaf. He faced harm and opposition in that cause, and was expelled and exiled, but still, he remained firm. Finally, in D\u012br\u2019iyyah (next to Riyadh), he found support from the ruler, Muhammad ibn Sa\u02bf\u016bd (from the House of Saud), who embraced this revival\u2014the da\u02bfwah of Ibn Taymiyyah, in essence, and the Salaf\u012b Creed and Manhaj. By All\u0101h\u2019s permission, much of the Arabian Peninsula adopted it, and it remains till this day, alhamdulill\u0101h. <\/p>\nAll\u0101h Most High says in His Noble Book:<\/p>\n

\u201cAll\u0101h will exalt in degree those among you who believe, and those who are given knowledge.\u201d
(S\u016brah al\u2011Muj\u0101dilah 58:11)<\/em><\/p>\nStrive, then, to be among those who combine knowledge and righteous action. Verily, actions are the fruits of sound, correct knowledge\u2014and this leads to taqw\u0101, to mur\u0101qabah (consciousness that All\u0101h is watching you), and to peace in the heart.<\/p>\n
My brothers and sisters, sons and daughters of the Ummah: acquire sincere \u012am\u0101n, beneficial knowledge, and do righteous deeds. For righteous deeds do not emerge except from knowledge. The dawah of All\u0101h does not advance and reach the people except by way of those who know. So if you teach, call to All\u0101h, or just remain steadfast\u2014with patience, firm resolve, and sincerity.<\/p>\n
Expect opposition. Be not surprised when harm comes your way. The path of truth has always been one of facing trials; the Prophets and Messengers (\u2018alayhimus-sal\u0101m) suffered more than any of us. Zakariyyah and Yahy\u0101 were killed: \u201cAnd they (the rebellious of Ban\u012b Isra\u2019eel) killed the prophets without right\u2026\u201d<\/strong> See Surah Al-Baqarah 2:61, 2:91, \u0100l \u02bfImr\u0101n 3:112.<\/p>\nThe disbelievers among the Children of Israel also tried to slay \u02bf\u012as\u0101 (Jesus, \u02bfalaihis-sal\u0101m), and the enemies of Muhammad \ufdfa caused him suffering, trials and physical pain. Indeed, the Prophet \ufdfa said, in words collected by Im\u0101m Ahmad, at\u2011Tirmidh\u012b, and Ibn M\u0101jah: \u201cThose people who are tried the most are the Prophets; then the righteous ones; then those who resemble them most; then those who resemble them most.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nAnd in another narration: \u201cA man is tried according to his religion; if he is firm in his religion, his trials are more severe, and if he is frail in his religion, he is tried according to the strength of his religion. The servant shall continue to be tried and put to trial until he is left upon the earth sinless.<\/strong>\u201c<\/p>\nAlso, the Messenger (\ufdfa) said: \u201cThere was no one who was harmed more than me for the sake of Allah<\/strong>.\u201d (Reported by at\u2011Tirmidh\u012b and Ibn M\u0101jah; declared sah\u012bh by Shaykh al\u2011Alb\u0101n\u012b.)<\/em><\/p>\nSo hold fast to the Book and the Sunnah; call to them both, knowing that harm may come\u2014but He whom All\u0101h wills will protect. Train your soul in patience. All\u0101h Most High says:<\/p>\n

\u201cOnly those who are patient will be paid their full reward, without reckoning.\u201d

\u201cTherefore, be patient (O Muhammad) as those with firm-will and resolve among the Messengers were patient [after they were rejected]. And be not in haste regarding what is justified upon them of punishment.\u201d<\/strong>
(S\u016brah al\u2011Ahq\u0101f 46:35)<\/em><\/p>\nThe Messenger (salall\u0101hu \u2018alaihi wasallam) was commanded to follow those who came before him from the prophets, and to guide the people with their guidance, and we have been commanded to be guided by the guidance of Muhammad (salall\u0101hu \u2018alaihi wasallam), and to emulate him:<\/p>\n

Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah, you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in (the Meeting with) Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much.
<\/strong>(S\u016brah al\u2011Ahz\u0101b 33:21)<\/em><\/p>\nThis fine example is all-encompassing in every affair; he is the example for us in our \u02bfaqeedah, \u02bfib\u0101dah (worship), good manners and in all affairs. Many of the callers in our time have abandoned the noble and fine manners of the Prophet (salall\u0101hu \u2018alaihi wasallam), but the caller to Allah (the Most High) must follow the example of the Prophet (salall\u0101hu \u2018alaihi wasallam), and present the best image of the da\u2019wah of the prophets and messengers, because other than this way will harm the da\u2019wah, and will cause the people to flee, and not accept the truth.<\/p>\n
The callers must study the seerah of the Prophet (salall\u0101hu \u2018alaihi wasallam) and his fine manners, his beautiful conduct, his \u2018aqeedah and manhaj (methodology); and then call to Allah according to this.<\/p>\n
So, beware of opposing the Messenger (salall\u0101hu \u2018alaihi wasallam) in his \u2018aqeedah, manhaj, da\u2019wah and manners. Upon you is to learn how the Prophet (salall\u0101hu \u2018alaihi wasallam) called the people, and then pray to Allah (the Most High) that you are inspired by this Prophetic guidance to wisdom, patience, forbearance, tolerance and pardoning the people and being gentle and lenient with them.<\/p>\n
Do not take one part of Isl\u0101m while leaving another part of the path to Allah (the Most High), for that will harm the Religion and the da\u2019wah. By Allah, the Da\u2019watus-Salafiyyah, in this era, and in other times, was not spread except at the hands of men, scholars, wise ones, forbearing ones who practised the manhaj of the Messenger (salall\u0101hu \u2018alaihi wasallam), and they implemented whatever they could from the deen of Allah, as much as they could!<\/p>\n
Therefore, many people benefited from them, by Allah\u2019s permission. This da\u2019wah of Salafiyyah was spread to every corner of the world, due to their manners, wisdom and knowledge. Shaikh ul-Isl\u0101m Muhammad ibn \u2018Abdul Wahh\u0101b (rahimahullah) died in 1792 CE, and from that time, this da\u2019wah has spread to every corner of the world in these few centuries. Sadly, in these days, the da\u2019wah has regressed and declined somewhat, and this is because the callers have lost the necessary wisdom, forbearance, mercy, manners and the gentleness of the Messenger (salall\u0101hu \u2018alaihi wasallam), and the wisdom of the early scholars. On an occasion when \u02bfA\u2019ishah (radiyallahu \u02bfanha) reviled a Jew because he insulted the Prophet, the Prophet (salall\u0101hu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said to her: \u201cO \u02bfA<\/strong>\u2018ishah, indeed Allah is gentle and He loves gentleness in all matters,\u201d <\/strong>(Reported by al-Bukh\u0101ri and Muslim from \u02bfA\u2019ishah herself).<\/p>\nIf these noble qualities and traits, which are from the necessities of giving da\u2019wah, are implemented, you will see people coming to the religion in huge numbers by Allah\u2019s permission. These are the qualities displayed by the scholars who call to Allah.<\/p>\n
In the time of the Prophet (salall\u0101hu \u2018alaihi wasallam), there was an Im\u0101m who was leading the people in prayer and making it very long, so the people complained to the Prophet (salall\u0101hu \u2018alaihi wasallam), so he said, \u201cIndeed, there are those among you who are scaring the people away, <\/strong>so whoever of you leads the people, must keep it short, for there are those behind you who are old and frail, and people who have business to do.\u201d (Reported by Bukih\u0101ri and Muslim from Abu Mas\u02bfood al-Ans\u0101ri). And he (salall\u0101hu \u2018alaihi wasallam) also said: \u201cMake things easy and do not make things hard, and give glad tidings to the people, and do not scare them away.\u201d <\/strong>(Reported by Im\u0101m Bukh\u0101ri from Anas bin M\u0101lik and Im\u0101m Muslim from Abu Musa al-Ash\u02bfari).<\/p>\nIn writing this article, I benefited immensely from the speech and writings of my shaikh, al-All\u0101mah Rabee\u02be Ibn H\u0101d\u012b al-Madkhal\u012b (may Allah shower him with mercy).<\/p>\n
