Hadith no. 10: “The Trials will Increase as Time Goes By.”

Az-Zubayr Ibn ʿAdiyy (Allah be pleased with him) said:

“We went to Anas Ibn Mālik and complained to him about the harms we were suffering at the hands of Al-Hajjāj. So, he said: ‘Be patient, for no time will come upon you except that the time after it will be worse than it until you meet your Lord. I heard this from your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).’

Imām adh-Dhahabī (Allah’s mercy be upon him) said in Siyar Aʿlām an-Nubalāʾ (4/343): “Allah caused him to perish in Ramadān 95AH. He was a despot, a tyrant, a hater of the Prophet’s household, a foul soul, and a spiller of innocent blood—yet he was bold and brave, a planner, shrewd and cunning. He was eloquent in speech and conversation; and venerated the Qurʾān. I have written about his wicked life in my at-Tāreekh al-Kabeer, about his besieging of Ibnuz-Zubayr (Allah be pleased with him) at the Kaʿbah, and his use of the mangonel [that destroyed it]. Likewise, his subjugation and humiliation of the people of the two Harams—and thereafter, his rule over Iraq and all of the east for 20 years, his war against Ibn al-Ashʿath, and his delaying of the prayers; until Allāh destroyed him. We do not love him, rather we hate him for Allāh’s sake and [hating for Allāh’s sake] is from the strongest handholds of Islam. He had good deeds, but they drowned in his oceans of sins, and his affair is left to Allāh. In general, he was upon tawhīd, and he is counted among the oppressors and tyrannical leaders of his ilk.”
